Laboratory – The main responsibility of the Laboratory is to analyze wastewater for chemical, physical, and biological parameters that indicate properly treated wastewater, meeting all discharge permit limitations, is being sent back into the environment.
Ohio EPA issued NPDES discharge permit includes a list of required analyses that must be reported monthly. The Sidney WWTP Laboratory is responsible for scheduling WWTP sampling events, analyzing samples, coordinating contract lab analyses, compiling results, and any other items needed to meet this monthly reporting requirement.
Since wastewater is treated through physical, biological, and chemical processes, it is necessary to quantify many parameters throughout the treatment train. Operations staff uses the Laboratory to monitor plant processes to insure proper conditions are met for optimal wastewater treatment.
The Sidney WWTP Laboratory also works closely with the Industrial Pretreatment Program (IPP) in monitoring and analyzing industrial discharges to the city’s sewers and WWTP to insure compliance with the city’s sewer use ordinance. This program also protects the WWTP from receiving slug loads of process inhibiting substances and conditions such as pH extremes, oil and grease, temperature extremes, biological inhibitors, and excess solids.
The Sidney WWTP Laboratory is staffed by one full-time Chemist and performs 600-800 analyses per month. The following parameters are tested in the Sidney WWTP Laboratory:

Total Suspended Solids (TSS)
Total Solids (TS)
Total Volatile Solids (TVS)
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)
Ammonia Nitrogen
Dissolved Oxygen (DO)
pH
Total Residual Chlorine (TRC)
Fecal Coliform by Membrane Filtration
Microscopic Examination of Activated Sludge
