Sidney Police 1820

The Sidney Police Department received a call around 9:16 PM on November 5, 2019, in reference to several suspicious subjects in the area of 920 Wapakoneta Ave. (AAA) checking vehicle’s door handles.  Officers arrived a short time later and wasn’t able to locate anyone in the area.

Around 9:38 PM, Off. Heindl was driving in the 900 Blk. of N. Miami Ave., when he observed a red Oldsmobile SUV going N/B without taillights on. Off. Heindl attempted to stop the vehicle, but the vehicle wouldn’t stop and continued N/B on N. Miami Ave.  Off. Heindl continued following the vehicle and advised to Dispatch that the vehicle wasn’t stopping, and other Officers started to respond to the area.  The vehicle then turned E/B onto Bennett St.  from N. Miami Ave., and continued driving E/B past the dead end of Bennett St. and went through a grass area of Whiter School.

The vehicle reentered the roadway at Broadway Ave., and went S/B on Broadway Ave. The vehicle then approached the area of Canal St. and failed to negotiate the curve and struck a vehicle that was E/B on Canal St.  The vehicle continued around another 120 yards W/B on Cana St. and the driver took off running from the vehicle while it was still in motion. The driver tried to flee the scene, but he was apprehended by Off. Heindl a short time later. The vehicle that was struck by the suspect had two occupants.  Both had minor injuries, and were treated on scene by Sidney Fire with minor injuries.

During the on scene investigation, it was found that the vehicle the suspect was driving was stolen from 1015 N. Main Ave., just prior to the short pursuit. The driver / suspect was also found to be a 13 Yr. old male.

At the time of this report, the juvenile was being treated at Wilson ER for minor injuries.  After his release, he will be incarcerated at the Juvenile Detention Center in Troy, Ohio for charges for the vehicle theft.

Additional charges are being reviewed and will likely be filed at a later date.
