[ARCHIVED] Recycling Audit Reveals Contamination

Door Card showing items able to be recycled in curbside collection program

Starting the week of June 20, 2022, Survey Crews working for the City of Sidney will be inspecting each recycle cart placed at the curb to determine if unacceptable materials are contained in the cart. The OOPS card will indicate what materials or conditions were observed that warranted the cart being tagged. Survey crews will not remove any materials from the carts nor will they directly touch any materials. They may use a tool to inspect the carts visually. The inspection process will finish at the end of the Week of July 25, 2022.

Please make sure your blue recycle carts are placed at the curb the night before your normal scheduled recycle pick-up date. This will ensure the survey crews have access to the recycle carts during their inspection schedule. The survey crew will be inspecting carts as early at 5 am each morning.

An audit was performed on the materials that were not accepted in the program prior to the inspection process. These materials were rejected at the Shelby County Recycling Center as contamination. By volume, the largest category of unacceptable materials observed during the audit were #3-#7 plastics which are not acceptable in the curbside recycling program. By weight, the largest contaminant was ordinary trash. In addition, a smaller portion of the contamination was plastic bags. Please do not use plastic bags in the recycling program.

The City accepts the following materials in its curbside recycling program only:

  •  Paper (newspaper, magazines, catalogs, paperboard)
  • Cardboard (Must be flattened and no larger than 2’x2’)
  • Plastic bottles/jugs (#1 and #2)
  • Glass food jars/bottles (food and beverage ONLY)
  • Metal cans

The back side of the OOPS card contains the list of recyclable material accepted in the City’s curbside program. Thank you for your cooperation in the City of Sidney’s curbside recycling program. Please recycle correctly and often.
