Water Treatment Plant Annual Update

Sidney City Hall Sign

The current Water Treatment Plant has a design treatment capacity of seven million gallons per day (MGD). With the addition of extra pieces of equipment, the maximum design capacity is 10 MGD. On average, the plant treats around 2.95 MGD of raw water into a finished product. Based on the present structure of the plant, the city is in a good position to meet current and future growth.

Like any business, an eye is kept on operating costs such as utilities and treatment chemicals. In 2021, $264,790.87 was spent on electric and natural gas utilities; this is a slight reduction from 2018 and 2019 totals. In 2021, $289,999.67 was spent on the treatment chemicals; average chemical costs over the past five years is $297,500.

Approximately 91.25% of the city’s source water comes from underground wells; a sample portion of the source water comes from the Great Miami River.

The Water Treatment Plant is staffed by five individuals who are Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA) Certified Analysts in Microbiology and Wet Chemistry. In addition, three employees are OEPA Operations Certified Analysts in Wet Chemistry. During the previous year, 100,000 operational laboratory samples were collected and analyzed by Water Treatment Plant staff members. In addition, 500 samples from the distribution system were collected and analyzed in house. Only 400 samples were collected and sent to contract laboratories for specialized analysis.
